One of Violet’s FAVOURITE activities to do is to bake cakes! Baking got us through lockdown and is always a hit on a rainy day, especially if Violet gets to lick the spoon afterwards. Even though lockdown was only a few months ago, Pearl wasn’t really old enough to understand and get involved with baking but in the last couple of weeks she’s really shown an interest so we’ve all started baking together! It’s been lovely to get her involved too without her just wanting to chuck flour on the floor and make a mess! She’s been saying words like ‘egg’, ‘bowl’ and ‘mix, mix, mix!’ – growing up so fast. It’s amazing how quickly they grow and change and it’s even more fun now the girls can bake together!
The Great British Bake Off has got to be one of the best TV shows on telly – we watch it every year, but I’ll always remember the series with Nadiya Hussain. Wasn’t she just the BEST contestant? I was rooting for her the entire time and so pleased when she won! She’s done so amazingly well for herself and it’s so well deserved – she’s a brilliant cook! As well as numerous cookbooks and TV cookery series, she’s now brought out a Deluxe Baking Set for children which the girls were so excited to try.

BAKING TIME!
As it’s coming up to Halloween, we decided to make Halloween Cupcakes! The girls are OBSESSED with Halloween this year, they just love anything spooky, so creating some brightly coloured orange, green and purple cakes went down a treat, plus they were super easy to make together too.
Here is a little video of us:
Baking with toddlers can be chaotic, so I tried to be organised by measuring out the ingredients for them – so the recipe would be correct. This wasn’t foolproof as I turned my back for two seconds and Violet added half a pot of baking powder to the mix, so we had to start over again, doh!
The baking set is great as the tools and bowls are just the right size for little ones to hold, plus the bowl is plastic so you don’t have to worry about any smashes either. The girls loved mixing the cake batter, taking it in turns as the next ingredient was added in. Their very favourite was the eggs, they were so excited as the yolk plopped down into the mixture below!
Once the mixture was smooth we added it to the silicone cupcake cases – these are so handy as we made a LOT of cupcakes and we will use these time and time again. The girls loved spooning the mixture out, it kept them busy for ages, plus it’s really great for their hand-eye coordination too.
We then decorated our cakes with different coloured icing to represent Halloween! I’m not sure if there was more icing on the cakes or in the girls mouths, but they were having a whale of a time! We loved trying Nadiya’s Deluxe Baking Set for children, we can’t wait to try some more recipes!
